Staff 1900's

of Gateshead Secondary School (a Higher Grade School) which later became Gateshead Grammar School

We know of three members of staff back then

The headmaster John Bidgood

Tragically Mr Bidgood died aged fifty-one, the year (1905) that Arthur Holmes passed his School Certificate

Replacement headmaster was Mr Walton under whose headship musical education was greatly advanced

Mr James McIntosh Physics/Geology

We know of Mr Walton and Mr McIntosh from the story of Old Boy Arthur Holmes. In the 6th form Arthur "encountered Mr.McIntosh, who introduced his pupils to the Lectures of Lord Kelvin and others. Holmes later remarked how the inspirational Mr. McIntosh and these works were largely responsible for the direction his life took, for it was at school that his interests in physics and geology were born."
