Entrance Exams, Papers, Fees

Norman Nicholson writes
I am now able to send some additional material for website. This is all related to the 1943 equivalent of the "11+". Of course in that year we didn't sit the 11+, we sat "The Scholarship" (exam).

The examination was in three parts, Arithmetic, English and an Intelligence Test and all were completed on the same day, as I recall. Pupils from my school, Harlow Green, sat the examination at Kells Lane School. We were allowed to keep the first two papers but the intelligence test was a worked-on paper. In the previous year, 1942, only the Intelligence Test was used to determine entrance and scholarship.

Copies of the Arithmetic and English papers are attached (please let me know if the resizes are OK). At our 'Golden Reunion' in 1998 (more of that to follow soon) we offered a bottle of wine to anyone who could complete the arithmetic paper. As the press report said, "I took the bottle home, nobody rose to the challenge."

Below are the 1943 entry pass lists. It is interesting to note, and probably a good basis for a discussion on equality and opportunity in education, that the total number of passes was equally split between boys and girls.

The significance of 'Scholarship' is explained by the other copies of letters regarding attendance, fees and their 'means testing', and the contract to remain at the school until aged sixteen, when the legal minimum age for leaving was fourteen. Did anyone decide not to accept the scholarship because of this, or of the fee, requirement?

Letter from School

Secondary Day School,
Durham Road,
Gateshead 8

12th August 1943.
Dear Sir (Madam),
The new school year begins, on Monday, September 6th, 1943, when all new pupils should present themselves at 9 a.m. I hope your child, who joins the school on that day, will be very happy here, and will do his/her best to take full advantage of the opportunities provided. It is the aim of the school to provide a course of education and training suitable to the after-career of the child, and at the end of the second year a choice is offered between Arts and Science, the Arts Division taking German or Latin instead of Science; in the case of the boys there is a further course open, Applied Science and Engineering. Parents are invited to make their wishes known and co-operate with the Staff. I can see parents at any time by Appointment only. Parents can help the Staff a great deal in the following respects.
1. Regular and punctual attendance is insisted upon. Pupils must not be absent without permission except in the cases of their own illness. In cases of absence through illness, after three days parents should send a note to me explaining the reason, and absence of a fortnight or more must be covered by a medical certificate. The illness of other members of the family cannot be accepted as an excuse for the absence of pupils.
2. Home-lessons must be done by all pupils on all school days. In Forms 1, 2 and 3 Home-lessons should occupy 1½ hours each evening. Progress in a Secondary School is very largely dependent on regular and interested attention to Home-lessons, which should not be regarded as a burden imposed by teachers. Pupils of Secondary School age, who are interested in their work at school will find it imperative to follow this up by a reasonable amount of independent work at home, and it is necessary to warn parents that neglect of Home-lessons invariably results in unsatisfactory progress. In cases where pupils show lack of interest and application, parents should communicate at once with the school. On the other hand, cases of over-pressure (chiefly among girls) should be reported without delay.
3. All books, with the exception of Home Reading Books, are loaned by the Education Committee. The pupil is responsible for the return of such books in good condition, and any loss or damage is to be made good by the pupil. Desks and lockers can be padlocked and failure to provide a lock and key will not excuse responsibility of the pupil if books are removed from desk or locker.
4. A report book is supplied to each pupil, and reports on pupils' progress are made in February and July. Testimonials given at the end of the school course are based entirely on these reports.
Yours faithfully,
G.L.Brown, Headmaster
